Defenders of Dynatron City was released on the NES in 1992. Developed by LucasArts, it was meant to be the start of a significant franchise and was also supported by a 6-issue comic book run, as well as a television pilot featuring big name actors such as Whoopi Goldberg and Tim Curry. Unfortunately, the franchise never really took off and these were the only DoDC productions that ended up being released.
In DoDC, you control several different heroes (the titular Defenders) as they attempt to thwart the nefarious plans of Dr. Mayhem, who’s planning to take over the city with an army of bizarre robots. Every hero has their own special abilities and limitations, so it’s up to the player to use them to the best of their ability and pray to RNGesus that their hits aren’t ignored by awful hit detection! Though it has a lot of flaws, figuring out the best possible set of heroes to navigate the open-world cityscape made it a very interesting game to route and solve from a speedrun perspective.
